Do your employees check emails whilst on holiday?

Are your employees putting your data at risk by accessing their emails whilst logged on to public Wi-Fi?

Checking emails whilst taking a well-earned break is not ideal or to be encouraged, however some business owners, directors and senior managers will say that keeping a watchful eye helps them relax, rather than not knowing what’s going on.

Do your employees check their emails even when on holiday?

If so, do they give a second thought to the security of public Wi-Fi?

How secure are public Wi-Fi connections?

Most airports, coffee shops, hotels and shopping centres offer free Wi-Fi.

Unfortunately, this provides cyber criminals a prime opportunity to intercept data that’s transferred over this type of network.

Public Wi-Fis can also be mimicked by using the location name and adding another word such as Guest. It looks like the real thing, but it’s not and cyber criminals are waiting to steal your personal information and data.

We advise you to encourage employees to disable settings in their phone, tablet or laptop from automatically connecting to non-preferred networks. The same goes for file and printer sharing.

We strongly suggest you use a VPN when connecting to a public Wi-Fi.

Accessing public Wi-Fi via a VPN not only encrypts data passing through the network but it also hides your online activities, so that neither the network provider nor others on the network can see what you are doing.

IT and Cyber Security

If your company takes a proactive approach to IT security, this simple example of holiday cyber awareness should be covered in staff training and your IT policies.

Cyber criminals are scouring for weak spots 24/7. They’re looking for holes in your IT infrastructure and testing your staff with phishing emails and scams.

Companies that take IT security seriously are implementing Cyber Essentials to not only protect their business but also to reassure their clients, suppliers, stakeholders and employees that they take their data protection seriously.

Unfortunately, we come across companies who believe their IT systems are secure, but when we carry out an IT audit that’s far from being the case.
